Course Description
Level A1 according to JF Standard
- Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
- Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives,people he/she knows and things he/she has.
- Can interact with others in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
Japanese Instructor
Ms. Shiyo has a MA in Japanese Pedagogy from Columbia University and has taught Japanese at various universities in New York and Philadelphia, including the City College of New York, the New School, and the University of Pennsylvania.
At UPenn, she worked as a lecturer from 2013-2017, and served as a head instructor for all the beginning level courses. Currently, she teaches at another US University, and the Japan Society in USA. She also currently conducts a monthly workshop on Business Japanese Communication sponsored by the New York office of Quick U.S.A. She is a recipient of the 2014 Professional Development Grant from Cheng & Tsui Publishers. Her pedagogical interests include technology-based language learning, linguistic landscape as a tool in foreign languages, kanji learning, and role-playing/simulation for L2 learning.
